Well, who do you believe?

Is Obama the new Gary Hart or the old Jimmy Carter?
Is Hillary the fix for societal decline or a nanny state ideologue?
Is John McCain a warrior statesman or a militaristic johnny-one-note?

Who do you believe?

Is this an election about change or about identity politics — or more of the same?

Isn't it likely the giant machine of a modern society will grind along with whichever leader we elect having little chance to change course too much before external events will determine much of the quality of future circumstance?

The best we can hope for is competence (attentiveness) and flexibility (a relaxed openness) and character (a sense of context). A lot to hope for.
